The partner is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Data) based in South Africa to join a lean and autonomous engineering team focused on developing products that help organizations understand and optimize their cloud data costs.
The successful candidate will play an important role in designing and delivering new product capabilities across backend engineering, data engineering, visualization, and cost-management workflows. Core Responsibilities
- Designing and developing new product features focused on data cost management, including forecasting, anomaly detection, cost allocation, and related processes.
- Building reliable, reusable backend and data-engineering solutions that provide customers with clear and actionable insights.
- Developing data pipelines and transformation models to support new product capabilities while identifying areas for improved efficiency and optimization.
- Creating and enhancing data visualization features that clearly present key metrics such as performance, query duration, efficiency, and other important insights.
- Developing robust and reusable UI components that support a seamless, intuitive, and user-friendly product experience.
- Strengthening application reliability, scalability, and performance through effective engineering practices and thoughtful system design.
- Taking ownership of features throughout the full development lifecycle, from identifying problems and defining requirements to technical design, implementation, testing, and release.
- Assessing technical and product-related trade-offs to prioritize high-impact solutions and deliver meaningful customer value efficiently.
- Working closely with engineers and senior stakeholders through clear proposals, documentation, code reviews, testing, and effective communication.
- Contributing to a culture that values practical execution, continuous improvement, collaboration, and high standards of engineering quality.
Skills & Requirements
- At least five years of relevant software engineering experience, with strong expertise in backend development and data engineering.
- Strong practical knowledge of Python, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, dbt, Dagster, and Snowflake.
- A solid understanding of system design, with the ability to develop scalable, reliable, and maintainable technical solutions.
- Proven experience developing data pipelines, transformation workflows, backend services, and data-driven product features.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively within a distributed team.
- The ability to work independently, take ownership of responsibilities, and remain accountable for outcomes from initial concept through to delivery.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with sound judgement when balancing development speed, technical quality, and customer impact.
- The ability to adapt to a fast-paced and evolving environment where priorities and requirements can change.
- Strong collaboration skills, together with a commitment to producing clean, readable, and maintainable code supported by clear documentation and thorough testing.
- A proactive, curious, and positive approach to engineering, with genuine enthusiasm for tackling complex technical challenges.
- Knowledge or experience in FinOps, cloud infrastructure cost management, data warehouse management, or observability would be an advantage.
- Previous experience working within an early-stage startup or similarly lean engineering environment would be beneficial.
